Spreading knowledge beyond the classroom

A recent study of graduates from the Bolivia CED program showed that the training is expanding through the efforts of the graduates themselves.  The curriculum uses a train-the-trainer component, such that graduates can share new knowledge and tools with others to multiply the effects – and it’s working!

  1. A survey with 90 CED graduates in Bolivia showed:
  •  more than 4000 replications of the training program in 145 communities — everything from sharing their learning with their colleagues, to organizing workshops in communities.
  • 52% of the participants have replicated CED training through informal workshops and conversations at the community level.
  • 34% of the participants have replicated CED training in their work place.
  • The replication training mainly focused on the CED principles and on the Asset-Based method for community planning. In other words, graduates are sharing the idea that participation matters! And that every community has strengths, resources, and assets that they can build on!

2. When asked “who did you do the training with?”, they told us:

  •  I did workshops with 12 associations of coffee producers, involving 803 families
  • Informally, I taught my family and community members.
  • In one municipality, taught CED to the assistant mayor and his technical staff who wanted to incorporate the approach into their economic development activities.
  • Incorporated some of the CED training into workshops in 28 communities with an average of 20 community members in each workshop.
  • To the 58 members of a dairy cooperative, who are now incorporating these concepts into their planning and expansion of the enterprise.
  • With work colleagues (NGO)
  • Trained 25 campesinos in one community.
  • With some municipal councillors and mayors.
  • Trained my staff, the economic development team in a rural municipality.
  • Trained 200 campesino leaders in my district in CED principles and capital analysis.
  • Designed a CED handbook, and through the methodology ‘peasant to peasant’, trained 12 communities located in the outskirts of Cochabamba.
